Fitter-Welders are skilled workers who put together and weld metal parts and pieces to create machines and equipment used in production.

Occupation description

Fitter-Welders are responsible for fitting, assembling, and welding metal parts and subassemblies to build production machines and other equipment.

Their tasks include:

Reviewing drawings and specs to decide on materials, methods, and order of operations, as well as machine settings.
Using specialized tools and machinery to cut, grind, and shape metal and other materials.
Welding metal sections together using various techniques.
Fitting fabricated metal parts into products and assembling them to create machines and equipment.
Using precision measuring tools to check accuracy, clearance, and fit of fabricated and assembled metal parts.
Cutting, threading, bending, and installing hydraulic and pneumatic pipes and lines.
Identifying and fixing issues with tools and machinery, and carrying out routine maintenance.

The qualification needed for this job is MEM30205 Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade. To get this qualification, you have to show your skills and knowledge in specific units. There are 32 units in total:
