Their duties include:

  • Reviewing blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine job, material, and equipment needs.
  • Choosing metal stock, such as stainless steel, galvanized iron, mild steel, aluminum, and copper, and ensuring sizes and dimensions match specifications.
  • Marking metal stock with reference points and lines using templates, gauges, and measuring instruments.
  • Cutting metal stock along guidelines using hand and power shears, guillotines, and drills.
  • Shaping and forming cut metal stock into products using folding and bending machines, rollers, presses, and hammers.
  • Assembling components into final products by welding, riveting, soldering, brazing, and other joining methods.
  • Finishing assembled products by polishing, filing, sanding, and cleaning.

    Stage 1

    Stage 2

    Technical Assessment

    If you successfully complete Stage 1, you’ll undergo a technical assessment. To prepare for this assessment, you’ll need the following skills and knowledge:

    • The relevant qualification for this occupation is the MEM30319 Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade.
    • To earn this qualification, you must demonstrate your skills and knowledge in the units of competency listed in the table below. Each unit outlines specific knowledge and skills required in Australian workplaces.
    • You must achieve a total of 29 units of competency, including 12 core units and 17 elective units.
